April was an exciting month in the rowing calendar because it marked the beginning of spring selection for the national team. The first of these selection regattas is in the double scull (two people, two oars each).A few weeks ago my double partner and I drove to Princeton for this regatta. We had shown decent speed in practice and were excited to see what we could do against the country's best scullers.The first day was a time trial. We executed our race plan, but truthfully, when it was over, I had no idea how we had done. It was only on the dock when another rower yelled to us "Hey Guys, good job!" that we found out that we got 2nd overall.The next day, even at 6am, the weather was nasty with 15-20mph winds. Regardless, we suited up, got in our boat and started warming up for our semi final. It was only 10 minutes before the race that the officials announced that the racing would be canceled for the day and would resume the following morning.When our semi finally went off the next morning, we had a composed race which we won in the 2nd fastest time of the day. At that point, we were just happy to have gotten to race, n though the wind was still kicking at 11mph.On saturday we had the Grand Final. After the successes of the last few races, we expected to beat crews that we had been beating or posting faster times than all week. We finished fourth in a tight race (2nd to 4th was .8 seconds!), but we realized that although it is not how we wanted to finish, it was still a solid result and a great way to start the season.I have another selection regatta in a few weeks, this time in the Single Scull. If I win this regatta, I will be able to compete at one of the world cups.
While I have had to readjust my season's plans due to injury, I decided to make the most out of it and still enjoy as much of swimming, biking, and running as my body allows for. I guess joining a large group of brave ladies for the Women's Dirt Days in Kettle Moraine, Wisconsin, might have pushed the definition of "recovery training" a little bit, but it was such a gorgeous day for us cold-struck Mid Westerners that I couldn't resist. It was my first time for a real mountain bike trip, and we totaled around 20 miles on the Jon Muir trails, covering steep hills, fast descents, and a lot of technical switchbacks. With mountain biking being brutally challenging at times and the day being significantly warmer than expected, I was happy to have taken enough Vitalyte Electrolyte Replacement orange as well as my favorite Chia Surge Gels with me, so I could power up the trails and stay on top of my bike (handling skills)!
We do a ride every Wednesday morning. Last Wednesday I started up Mt Lemmon without having breakfast. It's only a 23 mile ride from my house but I had eaten a lot the night before. I start my morning ride with Vitalyte in my bottles, usually the Grape or Fruit punch flavored. I also now take the Chia Surge with me, just one is all you'll need. I got to mile post 3 and was feeling quite hungry. I had finished most of my bottle of Vitalyte and remembered the Chia Surge in my pocket. I had that with more drink and continued to Molino Basin another 2.75 miles up with no problems. I have to admit, this Chia Surge is the best gel I have ever used. It just seems to give me that little extra kick.

In the off the season I find myself going into hibernation. I live in Michigan where the winters months grow darker and colder everyday. Finding the motivation to venture back out into the cold after working in it all day is sometimes tougher than the actual work out. One thing we cannot escape is cold and flu season. It has come full force in the Taylor household. I suffered two weeks of bronchitis and now my son is on his second week of his viral infection. He has had coughing soar throat diarrhea and vomiting for a week now. I could see in his face that he was just drained physically. I was thinking of going to get some Pedialyte from the local drug store when I remembered my stash of vitalyte I had. After a quick Google search I uncovered an article comparing vitalyte to Pedialyte. I have been giving my son the electrolyte replacement for two days now and I can see his color starting to come back. He loves the flavor of the fruit punch and hopefully will soon be back to his video game and clarinet playing self. I'm a 61 year young male. I took up cycling at the age of 47. SO for 14 years I've been riding. Mostly road but occasionally some mountain. I also do a little hiking on the side. I ride 4 - 5 times a week and work part time anywhere from 24 - 34 hours a week. I'm usually out about 5:15 am to get started. On weekends I lead a group ride on Saturdays & ride with the Susan Komen Breast Cancer group on Sundays. I ride maybe 200 miles a week. I've been using Vitalite for about a year now, before becoming Brand Ambassador.
I was always a sporty guy. Since I was born I played soccer, the most popular sport in Europe. Then, in my late teenage years I started to train martial arts, mostly influenced by the Bruce Lee movies, and continued doing so for about 10 years. When I turned 24, I came to the US and fell in love with body building. Around that time, I started to pay attention to good nutrition and healthy eating habits.
A few years ago, my wife ran her first full marathon. I was extremely happy for her but also full of envy. I really wanted to have a taste of what she accomplished and signed up for my first sprint triathlon. I signed up for my first Nautica Malibu Triathlon and started training. I was a total newbie but absolutely ready for the challenge. My first race was tough but I managed to finish in the first 20% of participants. I was ecstatic! I fell in love with competing and never looked back.
Next year, I aimed at the longer Olympic distance at the Natutica Malibu Triathlon. It took me about a year to complete fairly good tri equipment, educate myself about the sport, and master my food intake for weight loss and the optimum energy. My efforts paid off. I did pretty good and placed in the first 20%, once more. From there, my path was clear. I decided to aim higher, again, and I signed up for Ironman 70.3 in Honu Hawaii. With help of tri couches, I continued to work on my speed and techniques. I was in the zone and so ready to conquer Hawaii! Unfortunately, my wings were cut short. One day, when training on the bike, I was hit by a car and broke my collar bone. My dream was shattered. I was devastated… I did go to Hawaii that year, but as a spectator. It was an emotional and extremely inspiring experience. I knew that I have to be back to join the athletes.
After I fully recovered from the accident, I continued to challenge myself in triathlons. I also started to race in half marathons, each one running faster than the previous one. Over the years, beside the several Olympic distance triathlons, I competed in several 70.3 Ironman finishing best 13 place and 70.3 HITTS races, as well as 70.3 Wildflower that proved to be the toughest half triathlon, so far. Then, it was time for the ultimate challenge. This year, I completed my first full Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 12 hours. Next year, beside Ironman 70.3 Honu in Hawaii and Ironman 70.3 Silverman and full Ironman Arizona that I already signed up for I’m also considering Ironman Boulder and running the Los Angeles marathon.
I have been competing in Marathon Canoe Racing since 2004. Michigan has one of the toughest canoe racing circuits in the World. I gravitated towards the sport because the toughest canoe race in North America is in my home town of Grayling, Mi. The AuSable River Canoe Marathon. It is a 120 mile non stop race through the night with a cut off time of 19 hours. I have competed in the race 8 times. And with the exception of my first year where I finished 19th out of 65. I have been top ten or top 5 every year. My best finish was 4th place. I have competed in New York (General Clinton canoe regatta) and have finished top ten there as well. I am a husband, a father and while training for the sport I love I work 50-70 hours a week for Canadian National Railroad as a conductor. I love to compete. Whether it's playing board games with my family or grinding down a river for 120 miles I thrive on competition.
We all know how important hydration is for maintaining good health, but staying hydrated has benefits far and beyond what you may expect. Here are some of the unexpected benefits of staying hydrated to keep in mind!
Increasing your cognitive function: A study from King’s College in London found that long periods of dehydration could impair brain functions like planning and spatial relations. The first clue we often get that we are dehydrated is the failure to think clearly. Altitude sickness or “Acute mountain sickness” is a result of fatigue, dehydration and low oxygen levels. Just being at high altitude causes you to lose far more fluids than at lower elevations, more than a quart a day just from breathing. When you’re dehydrated, exercise makes you tired more quickly; real tiredness, not just being short of breath. Dehydration compounded by the low vapor pressure of oxygen results in changes in the blood chemistry, making it more acidic and harder to absorb what oxygen is available.
The afflicted person begins with classic symptoms of dehydration: Muddled thinking, irritability and fatigue. Additionally malaise, nausea, and headache at the base of the skull, tight shoulder and neck muscles follow if not relieved by descending to lower elevations or rehydrating with an electolyte replacement drink. Pleural or cerebral edema (Fluid accumulation in the lungs or brain) can result as dehydration progresses and the situation becomes life-threatening. Shortly after Vitalyte was developed, we received a letter from a runner who each summer spent his two-week vacation backpacking in the Sierras. Every year, after the first day, he would have a splitting headache and malaise, no appetite, and feeling lousy and nauseous. He figured that this occurred at high altitudes. Then one summer he took some Vitalyte with him. He drank at least a quart every day, and had none of the usual symptoms; no headache, no malaise, no nausea, and he covered longer distances than ever before. That is until he ran out of Vitalyte with a day and a half to go and had to get by with just water. When he finally made it back to his car, he shucked off his backpack; leaned against the car to unlock it, wondering how on earth he was ever going to be able to drive four hours back home. He got out a packet of Vitlayte, sat on the ground and made a quart. After drinking the full quart (“It was gone before I realized it!”), he became aware that his headache was going away and he was hungry. He wolfed down a sandwich, mixed up another quart of Vitalyte, and headed home, feeling normal again.

One day he realized that he was helping set up ladders across crevasses 2,000 feet above base camp ... without even the slightest symptoms of altitude sickness. He made sure that he drank plenty of Vitalyte and finally backed off at 20,000 feet, the highest he had ever climbed by over 4,000 feet! Others who began to exhibit symptoms of a.m.s. were promptly “dosed” with Vitalyte and all recovered quickly.
