The History Behind Vitalyte Electrolyte Replacement Drink

With all the fabulous advancements in genetic testing it's so easy now to find out "where you came from." So at Vitalyte, we thought our consumers might be a little curious about "where we came from." Here's a little about our history and who is behind that great electrolyte drink you mix up for every tennis match.

Our founder is a man named Bill Gookin. A biochemist by trade and runner by heart, Bill created our electrolyte formula to meet his hydration needs. He made, what he felt, was the ideal drink! His formula had all the essential electrolytes in the exact ratio that the body wanted. Bill started small, running his company out of his garage, and eventually grew as more and more people tried and loved his "Gookinaid." As the business evolved Bill realized it was time for a new name. He felt that his formula was "vital" for optimal hydration and it was an "electrolyte" drink mix, hence the name "Vitalyte."

Those of us who work at Vitalyte are sports enthusiasts. Whether its spending an afternoon on the golf course or a solid 45 shooting hoops, an active lifestyle is a common thread that unites us all. We continue to champion the values that Bill layed down over forty years ago when he founded the company: Provide the consumer with the best product on the market and give them the best value. And we do that! Our product is free from any artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners and we utilize non-GMO ingredients. Plus we offer more product for a much lower price.

So we hope that you've enjoyed getting to know us better. We thank you for being a part of the Vitalyte family and we'd love to hear your Vitalyte story!

  • See Why We Created our Electrolyte Replacement Drink for Cold Weather

Vitalyte's Electrolyte Replacement Drink for Cold Weather

Tis' the season where your winter wardrobe takes center stage in the closet and your warmest boots stand at attention faithfully inside the front door. And of course the typical accompaniments that go hand in hand with the dropping mercury make their appearance: the time change, weather related commute traffic, and the dreaded "snow day" off from school. Winter definitely knows how to make its arrival known! At Vitalyte we know that the long dark days from November through February can be challenging to say the least. Weather you cope by grabbing your poles and skis and heading to the mountain or curling up on the couch with that novel you've been meaning to read, we want to remind you there's one more thing you can do to combat the mountain chill and icy mornings. Hydrate! Yes hydrate. Most people consider dehydration to be associated with higher temperatures. However, it is just as easy to get dehydrated in cooler environments as it is in warmer ones. Here are a few reasons why: 1. People tend to drink less water when it's cold outside 2. When it is dry and cold outside, the body's demand for liquid increases to combat the lack of moisture in the environment. That's why we created our electrolyte replacement drink for cold weather. Our formula is made with the exact ratio of electrolytes your body needs to stay perfectly hydrated. Plus it is free from any artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners and we use non-GMO ingredients.

So this winter take a break from the snowy madness and put Vitalyte center stage to help you stay hydrated. We don't mind sharing the limelight with your wool coat and ski parka!

  • Vitalyte Electrolyte Replacement can Help Dehydration in Cold Weather

electrolyte replacement cold weather dehydration Leaves are changing colors, suddenly soup sounds like the perfect thing for dinner and your flip flops have been replaced with your boots by the front door. At Vitalyte we love the subtle entrance that Fall makes. But don't be fooled by this tiptoeing giant! He packs a mighty punch when it comes to plummeting temps and the effects that cooler weather can have on your hydration levels. Yes, that is correct! Colder weather can cause dehydration. Usually hot weather is associated with dehydration, but when the mercury falls your body does require electrolytes just as much as it does during a sunny day. Plus when it is cold and dry, the lack of moisture in the air requires more moisture in your body to counterbalance the dry air you are breathing in. So go ahead and curl up with a mug of your favorite tomato bisque. We will be waiting with a tall glass of electrolyte replacement right next to that perfect grilled cheese so you can stay hydrated.

  • Vitalyte at the North American Orienteering Championships

Vitalyte Electrolyte Replacement at the North American Orienteering Championships

north american orienteering championships electrolyte replacementWhere would we be without our iMaps, Google Maps, Waze and other helpful navigation apps for our smartphones? Whether you need to find your way from the office to a local auto repair shop, or from home to that little beach cottage five hours north, modern technology makes our oil stops and road trips more efficient and less frustrating. But, I have to admit, I remember the days when you needed to pay attention to how you got somewhere so you could get back. Like Hansel and Gretel but without the breadcrumbs! Not having had the convenience or brilliance of a true smartphone until my mid-thirties, I relied on learning from my mistakes to help my navigation scores improve. After all, proper nav ability was a form of modern day survival skills. My game became so sharp, and word of my acquired talent spread so fast, that my friends would call me in a teary-eyed panic from their flip phones while I would ask the pertinent questions like, "Did you pass the three story building with the purple balcony across from the donut shop yet? If you did you, you went too far." I literally steered my peers away from crying fits and panic attacks and I lost count of how many job interviews I rescued from the perils of "I'm going to be five minutes late, this looks so bad?" But alas my need diminished and my demand dwindled with advancement in technology and the app phenomenon. I could still find my way out of an un-named alley like nobody's business, but what did it mean anymore? I thought my skill was, well like the pay phone, a great thing but no longer relevant! But then I was told that, at Vitalyte, we were going to be sponsoring the largest orienteering meet in North America Orienteering?! I was quite intrigued and impressed when I learned about the combination of mental sharpness and physical fitness that was involved in the sport. Not only do participants have to navigate through challenging terrain using only a compass and map, but they have do so with the swiftness of a world-class sprinter, the alacrity of a top rated fitness competitor and the endurance of champion distance runner. A sport that calls on unassisted mental acuity, focus and athletic skill. It was like a math quiz with no calculators allowed! I was sold! "No wonder these athletes are reaching for Vitalyte," I thought. Our electrolyte replacement drink is perfect for orienteering athletes who require glucose to keep their brain power sharp and essential electrolytes to keep their bodies functioning on all twelve cylinders.

This September the North American Orienteering Championships will be held on the campus of the prestigious Dartmouth College. Hundreds of the top competitors in the sport will take part in this event that showcases some of the world's elite. Vitalyte will be on hand to help keep all those taking part hydrated and safe. And I will be watching feverishly to learn a few tips from the best, sans smartphone style!

  • New Electrolyte Replacement Stand Up Pouches

Introducing Vitalyte's New Electrolyte Replacement Stand Up Pouches

cool citrus electrolyte replacementAt Vitalyte Sports Nutrition we believe in TGIF, Sunday barbecues, birthday celebrations and anniversary parties. That is why when we turned forty years young we decided to go all out. Were we going to sit in the corner with an anti aging firming mask on our face and pout about seeing another decade? No way! Were we going to cry when we received the "Happy Birthday" post card from our dentist? Heck no! And were we going to go into panic when we saw the server at PF Chang's round the corner with a slice of mudpie that had a candle on top? Uh huh! No we did what any self-respecting four decade turning, trailblazing, passionate, age defying individual would do! We put our chin up and shoulders back and looked in the mirror and said, "It's time to do this in style!" And we went to work. Our branding team created, what we feel, is the perfect fresh new look for us. The bright bold colors will bring a smile to your face every time you reach for our perfect electrolyte replacement for daily use. The stand up pouches are more Eco friendly and keep our product fresher, longer.

But we didn't stop there. We looked for the best non GMO sources of ingredients and reformulated our product with them. We knew we were already good but we wanted to be better. We wanted to be as good on the inside as we now were on the outside. And after a lot of work, and truth be told, frustrating times with trial and error, we got it right. And I think you will agree too that we hit it out of the park. I hope you enjoy the way we celebrated forty as much as we did. And as the kids say, we are feeling "on fleek."

  • Hydrating Enough?

Cielo Acosta - Vitalyte Brand Ambassador

I am passionate about hydration, that's the best way to describe it.  I spent 8 1/2 years as a Seattle bike messenger before I was a runner and a firefighter which accustomed me to what I think of as my steam engine metabolism. I need a near constant intake of water along with quality foods, primarily heathy carbs or I become tired and run down. I feel I have to be constantly throwing fuel into my fire otherwise my body grinds to a halt, however if I am hydrating and eating well I can expect high extended performance which is what I aim for. I like my fluids, I need my fluids, I am sensitive to my body's need to be adequately hydrated and water is my beverage of choice. Unfortunately water isn't always enough.

It disturbs me to hear studies say up to 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated but I believe it. I see an increase in coffee consumption and soda consumption both of which can be dehydrating. People believe since they are drinking fluids they must be hydrating themselves when really it is the opposite. I've talked to people who seldom drink water at all. The human body is about 60% water. What happens when you aren't meeting your hydration needs? A host of problems. Our bodies need water to digest and absorb vitamins and nutrients, in addition it detoxifies the liver and kidneys. Lack of water can contribute to an array of medical issues, like fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, headaches, ulcers, high blood pressure, kidney disease and so on.

The commonly used recommendation of 8 8oz glasses doesn't hold true for everyone but it is a good place to start. Everybody has different activity levels, sizes and shapes which influence hydration needs. Keeping track of your intake for a week can be a good start. Sometimes people think they are drinking more than they actually are so keeping a hydration diary can be great for obtaining an awareness of where you are.

I am constantly evaluating and reassessing my hydration needs. I was thrilled to be selected as a brand ambassador for Vitalyte, a company that produces sports nutrition products with ingredients more natural than what you find in other company's products. I appreciate the lack of artificial coloring and corn syrup and it works. When I compete and work I do so most often in my fire gear. The gear adds 50 pounds and is very insulating. I loose a lot of water through sweat when wearing my gear due to activity and heat stress. I need more than water to keep hydrated and balanced. That's why when I was first introduced to Vitalyte's electrolyte replacement powder I jumped on it. It can easily be added to hydration packs and water bottles and is quickly absorbed. I did a marathon last year in full fire gear with SCBA pack and suffered from mild hyponatremia which is a sodium imbalance, I was drinking mostly water and not enough electrolytes, it was a very uncomfortable and scary experience and took a couple days in bed and lots of pediatric electrolyte replacement beverage to get my system back in balance. I realized then I couldn't drink plain water in my gear events. Now I pack my bottles and hydration pack with Vitalyte, the last marathon in my gear I felt great.

Today I did the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb, a fundraising event for Leukemia and Lymphoma, I climbed 69 floors of stairs in full fire gear on air from my SCBA in 18:59. I not only lost water through sweat but through respiration. I drank about 34 oz of water with Vitalyte electrolyte replacement powder and 17 oz of water with the Tri-phase enduarance before my climb. I notice a reduction in muscular fatigue when I use Vitalyte products and I feel hydrated, I don't get the water panic I used to get when I was drinking just water because my body is getting the electrolytes it needs.

Hydration can be a tricky thing to figure out because it is so individual but for me Vitalyte's products make it easier and keep me healthier so I can do the things I want to do.

  • Vitalyte + Soccer = <3

My daughter really loves drinking Grape Vitalyte during her soccer games. She has even started to drink Tri-Phase pre game and we have noticed her ability to play with more energy especially when she plays all 4 quarters.
She even scored 19 goals last season!

  • My name is Jamie Brown. I am a Triathlete, AMPUTEE, and DIABETIC.

Learning to be an endurance athlete with diabetes has always been tough.

Constantly checking blood sugar has always made me think of an appropriate sports cliché: "NEVER GETTING TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW" will help you be successful. Well, I really have to live that lifestyle.

Over the past year since I started my journey in this sport, I have been constantly looking for easy hydration and in race products to keep my training strong and races stronger. Since I started using Vitalyte products, I really have seen an increase in my ability to push my own limits... and I'm not just saying that.

I'm currently training for 2 major races in May. The ITU triathlon in San Diego May 12 and The Paratriathlon National Championships in Austin Texas MAY 29. I have been using Tri-phase endurance, which has totally amped up my energy levels over all. I've been training in Escondido, CA in an attempt to replicate the heat I may encounter in some of my races. On my longer runs, I've been loving Chia-Surge to keep my calories up without feeling full at all. Beyond that,  the electrolyte replacement sticks have kept me hydrated and cool on some of the hotter (90+) days, allowing me to go for over an hour on hilly terrain! I'm more than excited to be a Vitalyte Brand Ambassador so keep an eye out for my blog posts in the months to come! Thank you to Vitalyte for your amazing products!!
